The Envirothon is an environmental-themed high school hackathon that will enable anyone to have a jump start at their technology and STEM career. No coding experience is required to be able to participate in our hackathon.

Envirothon is a hackathon that encourages and empowers all high school and post-secondary students from different backgrounds to immerse themselves in the field of tech. The Youthopeian Envirothon in collaboration with Sci2foundation and You are the Change is a 48 hour hackathon (From September 17 8 P.M EST to September 19 11:59 PM EST) where we will equip you with everything you need to participate in our hackathon. However, we start accepting submissions from September 1st. Regardless of your past hackathon experience, we and our mentors are here to make your ideas a reality. We can’t wait to see the exciting new solutions you come up with since the possibilities are endless. 

In addition, throughout the hackathon, we will be having workshops and mentors to help you throughout the hackathon. Plus some awesome trivia games where you can win even more prizes!

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned hacker, The Envirothon is a great way to share your ideas, advance your career, and maybe even win some awesome prizes!

In addition, The Envirothon will be holding a fundraising raffle for a non-profit organization whose mission is to build a green school in Africa. Entering the raffle might give you a chance to win $25 USD plus a certificate to all participants of the raffle mentioning they helped fundriaser a school in Africa. This could be very helpful for resumes, university/college applications, scholarships etc! All funds will be donated to the organization. More information will be given to the participants after the registration process is complete.

Requirements

General

  • Must be high school student or post secondary student in the 2021-2022 school year (ages 13 to 25)
  • Complete the registration process
  • Join the Discord Server
  • Register on Devpost (this is where submissions will be accepted. Late submissions will not be accepted)
  • Complete requirements mention in our hackathon guide
  • Complete Check-in form before September 19
  • Submit video or powerpoint presentation and short research paper (optional) according to rules and guidelines 
  • Submission requirements must be submitted through Devpost no later than 11:59 PM EST on September 19

Judging Criteria

  • Solving the problem
    How unique is the solution? Is the solution relevant to the given problem? How feasible is the idea?
  • Business
    How cost efficient is the product? Does the price of the product make sense? Is this pitch/idea cost efficient for the target demographic?
  • Presentation
    Does the presentation explain the concept clearly? Does the presentation show the concept and its functionality?
  • Research Paper
    Is the research paper 2-3 pages? Is the submission between 300-800 words? Are all the resources cited? Are trusted sources used and were they cross referenced?
  • Relevance
    Does the design help solve an environmental issue? How well does your project satisfy the objective of the competition? Does this idea have an impact and how much potential does it have?
  • Ecofriendliness
    How eco-friendly is this product/idea? What materials are going to be used? What resources are needed to put your product in place and is it environmentally efficient?
  • Criteria
    The judges will watch everyone’s pitches and score them accordingly. Winners will be announced at the closing ceremony and everyone must be present.
